This authentic jersey will have the number 44 on it. This is the same style jersey worn by Pete Maravich with the 1979-80 Boston Celtics. Quality Construction Authentic Materials. Accurate detailing. This jersey is part of Mitchell & Ness' Hardwood Classics Collection and is made of double knit polyester. It has white trim around the neck and shoulders and "Celtics" across the front in white. The player's number is sewn on the front and back and the player's name is sewn on the back both in white. June 6, 1946, marked the birth of the Boston Celtics. Club owner, Walter Brown, named the team "Celtics" from the old "Original Celtics" in New York (1914-40). Arnold "Red" Auerbach was hired by Brown to coach the team for the 1950-51 season. When the Chicago Stags folded, its three guards names were put in a hat. Auerbach picked Bob Cousy's name out of the hat. In 1950, the Celtics chose Chuck Cooper of Duquesne as the first-African-American draft choice in the NBA. Brown and Auerbach selected Bill Russell out of the University of San Francisco in the 1956 draft and thus began a legacy in basketball never to be duplicated. In their inaugural season, the Boston Celtics finished 22-38. Although the team did not achieve a winning record, they had many colorful and interesting players.
