In the long line of NBA heroes, one who walks taller than most is former New York Knicks center Willis Reed. Suffering from a torn leg muscle during the 1970 NBA Finals, Reed limped on to the court just prior to Game 7, an act which in itself almost willed his teammates to victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. He started and scored just two baskets, but they were the first two of the night for New York and provided the inspiration his team needed to post a 113-99 triumph and secure the franchise's first league title. The 1965 NBA Rookie of the Year, Reed scored a âtriple crownâ of sorts in 1969-70 by being named MVP of the regular season, All-Star Game and NBA Finals. Before ending his 10-year career, Reed would win another NBA title and Finals MVP award (1973) and finish with 12,183 points and 8,414 rebounds. In 1976, he was the first Knick to have his uniform number (19) retired. Elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982, Reed was also named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players (1996).
