Country: Mexico In 1940, Gustavo Baz Prada, Rector of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma of Mexico, entrusted Costa Rican Rodolfo "Butch" Munoz with the preparation of the new football. In August of 1954, the university moved into the professional ranks. In 1962, after eight years in the 2nd Division, they obtained their long awaited League Title and the ascension to 1st Division. The crown was won decisively on January 9th, 1962 at home against Cataluna de Torreon, 5 goals to 1. With 78 goals, the Pumas were the highest scoring squad in the tournament. The championships would continue. In the 1980/81 season, UNAM reached its second 1st Division Championship, defeating Cruz Azul 4 - 2. Throughout the course of the season, the Pumas won the CONCACAF and the Copa Interamericana. The next year UNAM would repeat as CONCACAF champions defeating Surinam 3 - 2. Furthermore, in 1989 they win their third CONCACAF trophy after a 3 - 1 defeat of Pinar del Rio of Cuba. Moreover, in 1991, the Pumas would win another 1st Division Title. In their glorious history, the Pumas of UNAM have been Champion of Champions twice, have won the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy from Real Madrid, and have had 12 scoring champions, such as Evanivaldo Castro, "Cabinho", Hugo Sanchez, Luis Garcia y Bruno Marioni. On January 18th, 2004, the Pumas once again won the Clausura 1st Division Championship against Club America, thereby adding the fifth star to their jersey!
