Country: Italy From humble beginnings, AS Roma has developed into arguably the Italian capital's favorite side. With the cobra like triumvirate of Totti, Montella, Batistuta, and a pulsating back line, the Giallorossi repaid their loyal following by winning the 2001 Scudetto! - their third overall, but first in 18 years. Since that Championship season, Il Lupi - 'the wolves' - have been one of the most dangerous sides in Italian soccer. But that was not always the case. The Associazione Sportiva Roma club was formed on July 22, 1927 with the merging of three teams, Alba, Roman and Pro Roma (Lazio wanted no part in the new club), with one purpose in mind: To compete with the traditional powers of Italian soccer from the northern region. The new team quickly developed a loyal following among the poor residents of the Testaccio region and was on the path to success, finishing in the top 6 in each of their first seven seasons. The first scudetto came in 1942 behind the killer instincts of center forward Amadeo Amadei, who hit 100 goals for the side in Blood Red and Yellow jerseys. In addition to the scudetto Titles, Roma won their first of 7 Coppa Italias in 1963. In 1961, the Giallorossi dispatched Birmingham City 4 to 2 for their first European Championship: the Fairs' Cup! Some legendary players to have defended the capital colors of AS Roma are Alcide Ahiggia, Rudi Vr, Daniel Fonseca, Abel Balbo, Cafu, and the list goes on.
