Country: England Official Newcastle United 2004 Home Jersey. Newcastle United was originally formed in 1861; they were called the Stanley Cricket Club of South Byker. In 1882, they changed names to East End FC. Various North Eastern mergers followed until1892, when Newcastle United Football Club was officially constituted. Promotion to the first division was finally achieved in 1898. Newcastle United's association with the nickname The Magpies can be traced back to 1895 when a pair of nesting magpies settled at St James's Park. The Club consistently attracted some of the League's largest crowds whether they played in the 1st or 2nd Division. In 1968 entered European Competition for the first time in the UEFA Inter Cities Fairs Cup. Newcastle surprised their critics by beating several European giants to lift the trophy. In 1992 the Club brought ex player Kevin Keegan back as manager, the Club was in dire straits. With 16 games to save a 100 year old North East institution from dropping in to Division 3, Keegan managed to win his first game 3 0 and eventually keep the Magpies in Division 2. During their first season, they won the hearts of many with their attractive passing, attacking game and finished 3rd, their highest finishing place since 1927! In 1999 Sir Bobby Robson home to Newcastle United for what he calls 'my last job' and finished what Keegan started. The Club has enjoyed almost continuous success and is always a contender for the Title or the Cup.
