On July 4, 1939, Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig delivered his famous, "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth" speech to a sold-out crowd at Yankee Stadium. Dying from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), an incurable neuromuscular disease that would soon be named for Gehrig, the hearty slugger bowed out with dignity and grace. He died two years later, on June 2, 1941, at the age of 38.
